Hey {{First Name | there}}. Proofpoint agreed to buy Varonis on October 15, and this week 17 of 20 AI answers on data security still recommend Varonis without a word about the deal. Four list Proofpoint and Varonis side by side as rival picks. Only one answer cited Varonis's own site. An acquisition does not reach an AI shortlist until the pages the assistants read say so.
Inside: this week's shortlist across eight categories, a closer look at data security, where the answers come from, two moves that matter, and the play. A five-minute read.
New name, new format. Cyber GTM Signals is now The Shortlist: every week, what AI assistants tell security buyers, measured across eight categories with web search on. |

Proofpoint agreed on October 15 to buy Varonis, with closing expected in the first half of 2027; until then they operate as separate companies. Across 20 data security answers, Varonis made 17 lists, on all four assistants, and led six. None of the 17 mentioned the deal. Four named Proofpoint and Varonis as two separate options.
The assistants repeat the pages they find. In data security, 49% of cited pages were vendors' own and 18% were "best tools" roundups. Varonis's site was cited in one answer, Forcepoint's in seven, and no answer cited the deal announcement. Until those pages change, a pending sale stays invisible to the buyer asking.
If you sell: Selling against Varonis? Buyers are not hearing about the sale from AI. Bring the announcement and the expected 2027 close to the first call. If you buy: If an assistant shortlists Varonis, ask Varonis and Proofpoint what changes at close before you sign a multi-year contract. |
Where the answers come from
Share of the sources the four assistants cited, all eight categories this week. Each ● is 5% of citations.
Vendor-owned pages 50%
●●●●● ●●●●●
"Best tools" roundups 14%

Trade media 12%

Across all eight categories, half of the 606 pages the assistants cited were vendors' own and 14% were "best tools" roundups. Analysts made 10%, review sites 6%, Reddit and forums one citation. Gartner's site appeared in 36 of the 117 answers that showed sources, more than any other.
So a shortlist moves at the speed of those pages, not at the speed of the news. A deal, a rename or a new product reaches the answers only after vendor pages and roundups carry it.
Moves that matter
Binance put an attack's impact at about $6.3 billion; its first findings point to a compromised engineer laptop. On October 30 Binance said a compromised DevOps laptop let an attacker submit unauthorized withdrawals; about $3 billion is frozen and Binance will cover all losses. Binance If you sell: Developer endpoint, secrets and CI/CD access vendors: exchanges and fintechs have a fresh, dated case. If you buy: Map which engineer laptops can reach production withdrawal or signing services, then cut that path.
CISA lists an Adobe Commerce and Magento upload flaw as actively exploited. On October 27 CISA added CVE-2026-48356, an unrestricted file upload flaw in Adobe Commerce and Magento, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. CISA If you sell: Ecommerce security and managed patching vendors: Magento store owners have a dated reason to act. If you buy: Running Adobe Commerce or Magento? Patch CVE-2026-48356 now and confirm it with your host.
The play: get your deal news into AI answers
A deal is invisible to AI until the pages it reads carry it; these five steps close the gap.
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity five questions your buyers ask, and note whether any answer mentions your latest deal or ownership change.
Put the news on the pages assistants cite: homepage, product pages and pricing page, in plain sentences, not only in a press release.
List the roundups and review profiles the assistants cite in your category, and send each publisher a dated update with the new facts.
Publish a customer FAQ on what changes for contracts, support and roadmap, so an assistant has an answer to quote when a buyer asks.
Re-run the same five questions every two weeks until most answers carry the news, then fix the next page that still lags.
Quick poll: When an AI assistant recommends a vendor, do you check its ownership news separately before you shortlist it? Reply with your answer; results next week.
The number: 0 of 17. AI answers that recommended Varonis for data security mentioned that Proofpoint agreed to buy it. Source: The Shortlist, measured Nov 2, 2026. |

See your own shortlist. Reply with your company's domain and category. We run the same buyer questions across all four assistants and send you who they name instead of you, and the pages they cite. Free, one report, no pitch. From GTMfusion. |
Method: Five buyer questions per category, asked to ChatGPT (gpt-5.4-mini), Gemini (gemini-3.8-flash), Claude (claude-haiku-5-5) and Perplexity (sonar) with web search on, measured Nov 2, 2026. We count shares of answers, not ranks, because AI answers vary from run to run; a change counts only beyond ±22 points. How this is made: the measurement runs every Monday, Claude drafts, Martin Tantow edits and signs.
